Sightings 2/4/16

Summary:
Some overnight rain followed by a fantastic birdy day with stuff pouring into the area.
Chiffchaff & Willow Warbler arriving in force everywhere plus some new migrant species, Sedge Warbler, Ring Ouzel and Redstart.
Lovely raptor weather too, 4 Red Kite, 1 Marsh Harrier. 6 Sandwich Tern at Middle Hope and a couple of good counts of Wheatear.

2/4/16 Chiffchaff at Clevedon (Howard Taffs)

Stockwood (Bristol):
Open Space: 1 Buzzard, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Jay, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Long-tailed Tit, 12 Chiffchaff, 2 Starling, 4 Greenfinch, 20+ Goldfinch.

Bishopsworth (Bristol):
Crox Bottom: 1 Buzzard, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Long-tailed Tit, 7 Chiffchaff, 5 Blackcap, 1 Song Thrush, 3 Grey Wagtail, 8 Goldfinch.

Stoke Park (Bristol):
1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Jay (nesting), 10 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Blackcap.

Ashton Court (Bristol):
1 Barn Owl seen at dawn (Ed Drewitt dawn chorus walk).
Other stuff, 2 Buzzard, 2 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Jay, 3 Goldcrest, 2 Long-tailed Tit, 3 Chiffchaff, 8 Nuthatch plus corvids plucking fur off the deer for nesting material.

Redland (Bristol):
Waverley Rd: 1 Ring-necked Parakeet.

Avonmouth (Bristol):
Docks: 28 Gadwall, 2 Ringed Plover (at a nesting site), 15 Redshank.

Chipping Sodbury:
Common: The Smew still on the lake, 1 Red Kite 4.15pm (Darren Pearce), 2 Sand Martin, 1 male Redstart 3.40pm (Darren Pearce).
Quarry Rd: 2 Dipper, river Frome.

Almondsbury:
Lower Knole Farm: 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Redpoll.

Oldbury Power Station:
Ring Ouzel:  A male around lagoon 2 this morning (Pete Hazelwood), our first of the season.
Other stuff, 1 Greylag Goose, 10 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin, 30 Turnstone, 7 Sand Martin, 3 Swallow, 2 Willow Warbler, 1 Blackcap, 1 Wheatear, 1 Siskin, 2 Redpoll, bathing in puddles lagoon 2.

New Passage-Northwick:
Egyptian Goose: 1 fly-through briefly to south (John Martin). Patch rarity.
Red Kite: 3+ birds, flyovers noted at 1.10pm, 1.20pm and 1.25pm (Brian Lancastle, Rich Miles).
Marsh Harrier: 1 fly-through male bird, at the wetland mid-afternoon (Ed Drewitt).

Pool car-park:  1 Buzzard, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Coal Tit, 2 Nuthatch.
50 Acre Wood: 4 Chiffchaff.

Pill:
Crockerne Drive: 2 Siskin, garden feeders.

Portbury Wharf:
5 Sand Martin, 1 Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler numbers in double figures.

Portishead:
Boating Lake: 2 Mute Swan, 1 Greylag Goose, 2 Canada Goose, 8 Tufted Duck.

Weston Moor:
2 Canada Goose, 5 Tufted Duck, 1 Grey Heron, 4 Buzzard, 1 Swallow, 4 Long-tailed Tit, 50+ Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Reed Bunting.

Dundry Hill:
10 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 male Redstart, 26 Wheatear (field by Carpenter's pub), all this evening.

Clevedon:
Fairleigh Rd: 6 Chiffchaff, garden.

Clevedon coast:
Dowlais: 1 Kestrel, 1 Merlin, 1 Peregrine, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Barn Owl (evening),1 Short-eared Owl, 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Stonechat, 8 Wheatear.
Wain's Hill: 12 Sand Martin, 7 Swallow, 17 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 6 Siskin this morning.

the bird was being eyed up by the raptors here this morning

1 male Redstart, south slopes mid-way between Trig Pt and tip (Nigel Kempson).

Sand Bay:
'Endless' Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warbler, 6 Blackcap, 1 Redstart, 18 Wheatear.

Middle Hope:
6 Sandwich Tern, Woodspring Bay side and close in this afternoon (Paul Gregory). Other stuff here, 1 Little Egret, 2 Willow Warbler.

Worlebury Hill environs: 11 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap, 1 Redwing.

Walborough NR: 6 Reed Bunting of note.
